Aaron is a pioneer ice climber. He hikes through and flies over the mountains of Wyoming to scout out some of the newest and sickest ice falls in the country. All of his explorations and pioneering has generously paid off with nearly 100 first ascents. His knack for exploring comes from his history of hunting and hiking with his father in California. Aaron was introduced to climbing after he moved to Colorado where a co-worker took him out climbing for the first time. It only took one throw of the axe and he was hooked for life. Aaron lives a double-life. In the winter he climbs up the waterfalls and in the summer he paddles down them. Aaron likes to be the first to do a lot of things, and nabbing first descents in his kayak is one of them. So be it frozen or melted, he can always be found at the waterfalls.

On Episode 45 of the Enormocast, I sit down with kayaker slash ice climber Aaron Mulkey. With the strength of 10 men, Aaron attacks both first descents and first ascents with zeal and unwavering psyche. Aaron admits that he’s a bit of an adrenaline junky and a lucky optimist that gets in over his head once in a while. In addition, I tell the tale of my near death at the hands of the screaming barfies. Good times at the Rodeway Inn.

Exploratory Ice Climbing Deep in Wyoming with Aaron MulkeyMen's Journal

To self-professed ice climbing “addict” Aaron Mulkey, the mountains surrounding Cody offer a lifetime of adventure. Like a treasure hunter, he’ll ride snowmobiles for hours, and thrash up steep hillsides with hopes to find hidden gems. To date, he has more than 100 first ascents outside of Cody, some hanging ice daggers, some frozen smears of white, others a mix of ice and rock. “My passion has always been first ascents,” he says of his 20 years with the sport.

Adventure Addiction with Aaron MulkeyGrivel Blog

I do believe people have become comfortable following the road most traveled. Information is more available today than ever. Photos, videos or satellite images make the world visible to the masses from any armchair. Guidebooks have eliminated some of the risks and has made the unknown…known.  Most people will always choose the knowable versus the unexplored. It’s self preservations at its finest. But what about the places you can’t Google? Those are the places I am in search of.

Aaron also has his own website, full of great pictures and videos, a blog, merch, and even a report of ice conditions!
